64: The House of Creativity, with Wedding Photographer Perry Vaile

Some believe the creative path is a winding road from zero to (one-day) reaching your full creative potential.  But for destination wedding photographer Perry Vaile, that didn’t work for her. Because as creatives, some days are more productive than others, and sometimes we have feel like everyone else is doing so much more than us, and sometimes we’re on a roll, and sometimes we want to be proud of our accomplishments, and some days, we fail.  It’s a mindgame. And so Perry came up with an amazing metaphor called The House of Creativity!       Perry Vaile on Social Media: Instagram: @perryvaile   Weddings for Real on Social Media: Instagram: @weddingsforreal Facebook: @weddingsforreal twitter: @weddingsforreal

63: LGBTQ Weddings and Equality-Minded Content, with Brittny Drye (Love Inc) and Sha’Quitta Brown

Brittny Drye started Love Inc Magazine in October 2013 as the first equality-minded wedding publication. And although the wedding industry has come a long way, we still have so much further to go to make sure that LGBTQ couples aren’t discriminated against.  Part of that is looking into our content – are we using bride- and groom-specific verbiage on our websites, contracts, and proposals? And even in our own language?   Sha’Quitta Brown just got married to her wife L’Erin in July 2018. And for them, they didn’t feel welcome by all wedding vendors. Some were downright bigoted, and some just didn’t have the collateral on their website to make Sha’Quitta and L’Erin comfortable in contacting them. For those who are outwardly intolerant, Sha’Quitta doesn’t have any time for them. But for those who WANT to be inclusive and who WANT more LGBT weddings, Sha’Quitta has some great advice.   Brittny Drye (Image by Brandi Gard)   L’Erin and Sha’Quitta (image by Cedrick Forrest of Showtime Studios)   Love Inc on Social Media: Instagram: @loveincmag twitter: @loveincmag Facebook: @loveincmag   Weddings for Real on Social Media: Instagram: @weddingsforreal Facebook: @weddingsforreal twitter: @weddingsforreal

6: Palliative Care Hospital Chaplain and Bereavement Coordinator Heidi Gessner

Heidi Gessner is the palliative care hospital chaplain and bereavement coordinator at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill NC.  Today she talks about what a hospital chaplain does, her personal story on how she got into the industry, different ways people can grieve, and some of her favorite stories from her 17 years as a chaplain.

On this podcast from Renaissance Funeral Home in Raleigh North Carolina, we go beyond the obituary to share memories of loved ones who have passed on. We’ll also hear from some people in the death industry – cemetery directors, therapists, clergy, and (like today’s guest) hospital chaplains.

Heidi is also a life coach and is hosting a “Create Your Life Vision-Board Retreat” on August 24th.

If you’d like to get in touch with Heidi, she can be reached at heidi.gessner@unchealth.unc.edu.

5: Owen Preston, 4/2/08-4/29/17: Touching Lives While Battling Brain Cancer

On this podcast from Renaissance Funeral Home in Raleigh North Carolina, we go beyond the obituary to get a better sense of who those people were who have passed on. What were some of the stories that define them?  We’ll hear from the people who loved them because they are so much more than a one-page obituary.

On today’s episode, Jennifer Preston lost her son Owen to a glioblastoma in April 2017. Jennifer shares so many stories of the special person that Owen was, his strength, and the impact he left in touching so many lives as he was going through his battle with cancer at the Ronald McDonald House and New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

We also talked about how important a Child Life Specialist can be, a trip to Alaska the family took before Owen passed away, and the work that Jennifer and her husband Brian are doing now to help with cancer research.

Owen and Jennifer Preston

Jennifer mentioned one of the charities her family supports, Reelin’ for Research, to raise money for UNC Children’s Hospital.  Check out Owen’s page and donate here.
